On the way to Borrego Springs and the Anza Borrego desert, stands a monument to the effect of unemployment in the desert. In the 1920s, Jacumba resident, Bert Vaughn, built the tower in the middle of the desert, providing a stunning view of the boulders and rugged desert plants surrounding the area. Perhaps stranger and more striking however, are the accompanying sculptures carved near the tower by W.T. Ratcliffe while unemployed during the Great Depression.
